" The Body " is the sixteenth episode of the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and is the ninety-fourth episode in the series. Written and directed by Joss Whedon, it originally broadcast on February 27, 2001 on The WB network. Synopsis TRAGEDY SHATTERS BUFFY 'S WORLD — Buffy and her friends are overwhelmed with grief and their lives are changed forever when they must deal with the loss of someone close to all of them. [1] Summary The daughter Buffy returns home to find that Joyce has been sent flowers from the man she recently had a date with, and calls upstairs to see if Dawn needs picking up. Receiving no answer, Buffy heads into the sitting room to see her mother sprawled across the couch, paled-skin, with opened eyes, and not breathing. Buffy soon realizes something is wrong. On Christmas 2000, Buffy, Xander, Willow, Anya, Tara, Dawn, Giles, and Joyce enjoy Christmas dinner together. In the table, the gang discuss the demonic truth about Santa Claus. Buffy and Joyce head into the kitchen to find the pie has burnt. The pie slippers from the table as Buffy tries to slice it, and two exclaim in surprise. In the present, Buffy runs to her motionless mother and attempts to wake her without success, then calls 911. The operator sends the ambulance and talks Buffy through performing CPR, while awaiting the arrival of the medical team. Buffy accidentally cracks one of Joyce's ribs, and this attempt is also unsuccessful. The 911 operator assures her not to worry, but when Buffy claims "she's cold", the operator refers to Joyce as "the body". Buffy hangs up as the 911 operator starts to tell her the medical team will soon be with her. Buffy then calls Giles, asking him to come to her home, only telling him that "she's at the house". The paramedics soon arrive and begin to try and resuscitate Joyce, while asking Buffy details about what happened. Suddenly, Joyce coughs into life much to everyone's relief. As the ambulance drives her to the hospital, the paramedics refer to it as a "wonderful miracle" and Joyce later thanks Buffy for finding her in time… But this is all Buffy's imagination. The paramedics continue to try and resuscitate Joyce, but get no response. One of the men notes that Joyce is cold. Buffy watches as her mother is then officially pronounced dead. One of the paramedics explains that Joyce may have died from a complication relating to her recent brain tumor, and will be calling the coroner to come and collect the body. They then get a call to another address and have to leave, and Buffy wishes them luck. She then walks into the kitchen and vomits. Suddenly Giles arrives thinking Glory has attacked, but he sees Joyce and starts resuscitation attempts. Buffy calls to him that they're not supposed to move the body, then realizes in shock what she's said. Giles rushes to hug her. The coroner eventually arrives and places Joyce's body in a body bag. The sisters At Sunnydale Junior High, Dawn is sobbing in the girls' bathroom. A student named Kevin Berman had called her a freak, an outcome of Kirstie spreading rumors that Dawn had been cutting herself. Her friend, Lisa, consoles her, and they leave the bathroom. As they head for art class, Dawn and Kirstie greet each other in the hallway. In class, Dawn takes a seat next to Kevin and the two begin to talk, as her art teacher instructs them to draw the negative space around a statue. As it turns out, Kevin is actually interested in Dawn and the two begin a conversation about their mutual disdain for Kirstie. Outside the classroom, Buffy arrives and talks to the teacher. She enters the classroom and Dawn doesn't understand what's happening, but Buffy explains that they need to go. Outside the classroom, Dawn wants to know what's happened, since Joyce was supposed to pick her up. Buffy attempts to take her sister somewhere private, but Dawn refuses and gets more upset. She demands to know where Joyce is, so Buffy is forced to tell her there and then. The others in the art class are unable to listen, watching the two through the window. As Buffy talks to her, Dawn collapses to the floor in tears. The family In their dorm at UC Sunnydale, Willow and Tara wait for Xander. Willow starts to break down as she can't find a certain blue shirt that Joyce once liked, and feels that the others are either too somber or too childlike to wear in the hospital. Tara attempts to keep Willow calm, and reminds her that she has to be there for Buffy and Dawn. Thinking of Dawn causes Willow to start crying again. Tara eventually manages to help Willow stop the tears, kissing her and telling her she has to remain strong. Xander and Anya soon arrive at the campus and he double-parks, not caring if he gets a ticket. Joining Willow and Tara, the four discuss their shock over what's happened. Anya starts to ask questions about what is going to happen, however no one answers. Xander suggests that Glory is responsible for Joyce's death, then tries to blame the doctors who operated on her, getting angrier that this is something that "just happened". Willow jokingly offers to take him on, helping Xander to calm down. Tara offers to look for Willow's blue shirt in the dorm's laundry room, and leaves. Anya asks if they're "going to cut the body open". Willow gets irritated and tells her that it is not okay to ask such things. Anya goes on explaining that she doesn't understand the whole mortal coil and the concept of dying, and starts crying. Willow, now calmer, tells her that they don't know either. While Willow's back in turned, Anya finds the blue shirt under chair cushions but puts it back, not knowing it is being searched for. The room goes silent, and Xander punches his fist through a wall, getting his hand stuck in the hole. He is soon freed, and Tara arrives, failing to find the blue shirt, but Willow tells her it doesn't matter. After tending to Xander's wounds, the group leaves the room, while Xander's car gets a ticket. The body The Scooby Gang meets up at the hospital, exchanging hugs and supporting words towards Buffy, Dawn, and each other. Doctor Kriegel tells Buffy that Joyce's autopsy has revealed that she died of an aneurysm resulting from her brain surgery, and assures her that Joyce died quickly, with almost no pain, and that even if she'd been by Joyce's side there would have been little she could have done. Buffy, however, imagines he confesses he's lying to make her feel better. Giles leaves to sign the release forms, and Dawn goes to the bathroom. The remaining Scoobies discuss how Dawn is doing, and Buffy feels that Dawn is angry with her for being the one to break the news. Anya tells her she wishes Joyce didn't die, and Buffy thanks her. Willow, Xander, and Anya then decide to go and buy food from the vending machines for the two sisters, leaving Buffy and Tara sitting in silence in the waiting room. Buffy explains that everyone is trying to help, while she still can't believe it's happening. Tara then reveals that her own mother had died when she was seventeen, and shares some helpful words for Buffy on the subject. When Buffy asks Tara if her mother's death was sudden like Joyce's, Tara tells her it wasn't and yet it was. Meanwhile, Dawn leaves the washroom and decides to head for the morgue to see Joyce's body. Ignoring the "authorized personnel only" signs, she enters, locking the door behind her. Dawn approaches Joyce's covered body, trying to reach out to remove the sheet, but can't. She doesn't notice a vampire rising from one of the tables behind her. He approaches, and Dawn hears him as he walks up behind her. As her friends arrive back with armfuls of food, Buffy realizes that Dawn should have returned. Knowing where Dawn has gone, she sets out for the morgue and finds Dawn struggling with the vampire. Buffy kicks the door in and takes on the vampire, and in the scuffle the sheet covering Joyce is pulled down. Buffy finally beheads the vampire using a bone saw, and finds Dawn staring at Joyce's body. Dawn asks if their mother is cold, but Buffy tells her that the body isn't their mother anymore. Slowly, Dawn reaches with her fingertips toward the body's cheek. Continuity This episode picks up a few moments before " I Was Made to Love You " left off. The Christmas scene takes place sometime between " Into the Woods " and " Checkpoint ". In the flashback, Buffy tells to Joyce and Giles: "As long as you two stay away from the band candy, " in reference to the events from " Band Candy ". Dawn's self-harm incident in " Blood Ties " has ignited a fuel of rumors that spread across the school. Xander says, "We do morgue time with the Scooby Gang", referring to their often visits to the morgue, as seen in the episodes " Never Kill a Boy on the First Date ", " Beauty and the Beasts ", and " Help ". When Xander accuses Glory for Joyce's death, he mentions the threat Glory had made about killing Buffy's family and friends in "Checkpoint". Dealing with Joyce's death, Xander punches a hole in the wall. Six years later, he will punch the wall again ( Apart (of Me), Part One), to soon seek counseling for his anger issues ( I Wish, Part Two). Willow and Tara's dorm room is number 213. Willow and Buffy's dorm in the previous year was identified as 214. Tara mentions her mother's death. We first found out that her mother was dead in " Family ". The side-effects of the brain surgery which removed Joyce's tumor in " Shadow ", " Listening to Fear ", and " Into the Woods ". Joyce Summers' and Cassie Newton 's ("Help") are the only deaths in the series that are due to natural causes. When Buffy finds her mother dead, she says, "Mom? Mom? Mommy? " Dawn repeats this phrase in " Conversations with Dead People " when she thinks Joyce is trying to communicate with her. In "Conversations with Dead People" as well, when the First Evil appears to Willow at the library, it mentions that Willow is strong like an Amazon, referring to Tara and Willow's exchange in this episode. Goofs, bloopers & continuity errors The image on Dawn's canvas when she leaves the room is completely different than the image when the camera does the close up of it at the end of the scene. Despite the apparent illusion of the vampire in the morgue being nude, the blue rim of his pants can be seen briefly when he and Buffy are fighting. Paramedics in the state of California are not allowed to pronounce death without consulting with a telemetry physician which we don't hear them do. Contrary to popular belief, paramedics can determine that CPR is no longer indicated and may stop. When Buffy is in the living room with Joyce's body in the zoom up, the boom mike up in visible in the right hand corner. Buffy moves Joyce's body fully onto the couch to perform CPR, but later it is in the same position it was in when she got there. When everyone is in the waiting room at the morgue, the camera is visible moving off to the left side. Ajay ( Emraan Hashmi) is married to Maya ( Sobhita Dhulipala), a successful businesswoman who passes away within the first few minutes of the film. After her body goes missing from the morgue, SP Jairaj Rawal ( Rishi Kapoor) is called in. Convinced that Ajay is responsible for her death, he takes it upon himself to find out the truth. 'The Body' does not bring anything new to the thriller genre. While director Jeethu Joseph has tried to spin new twists, they fail to deliver. Considering it is an adaptation with a ready-made script, the film looks patchy. There was enough meat in the story for it to have been an engaging thriller, but the film meanders for the most part. What does work for the film is its cast. Kapoor stands out as the police officer who will pull no punches to find the culprit. Hashmi works hard at appearing convincing as a romantic partner with questionable morals. While Dhulipala does the rich woman with a twisted psyche act perfectly, debutante Vedhika Kumar, as Ajay’s another love interest, does whatever she could with the material she was provided with. Characteristic of the vertebrate form, the human body has an internal skeleton that includes a backbone of vertebrae. Typical of mammalian structure, the human body shows such characteristics as hair, mammary glands, and highly developed sense organs. Beyond these similarities, however, lie some profound differences. Among the mammals, only humans have a predominantly two-legged ( bipedal) posture, a fact that has greatly modified the general mammalian body plan. (Even the kangaroo, which hops on two legs when moving rapidly, walks on four legs and uses its tail as a “third leg” when standing. ) Moreover, the human brain, particularly the neocortex, is far and away the most highly developed in the animal kingdom. As intelligent as are many other mammals—such as chimpanzees and dolphins —none have achieved the intellectual status of the human species. Chemical composition of the body Chemically, the human body consists mainly of water and of organic compounds —i. e., lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids. Water is found in the extracellular fluids of the body (the blood plasma, the lymph, and the interstitial fluid) and within the cells themselves. It serves as a solvent without which the chemistry of life could not take place. The human body is about 60 percent water by weight. Lipids —chiefly fats, phospholipids, and steroids —are major structural components of the human body. Fats provide an energy reserve for the body, and fat pads also serve as insulation and shock absorbers. Phospholipids and the steroid compound cholesterol are major components of the membrane that surrounds each cell. Proteins also serve as a major structural component of the body. Like lipids, proteins are an important constituent of the cell membrane. In addition, such extracellular materials as hair and nails are composed of protein. So also is collagen, the fibrous, elastic material that makes up much of the body’s skin, bones, tendons, and ligaments. Proteins also perform numerous functional roles in the body. Particularly important are cellular proteins called enzymes, which catalyze the chemical reactions necessary for life. Carbohydrates are present in the human body largely as fuels, either as simple sugars circulating through the bloodstream or as glycogen, a storage compound found in the liver and the muscles. Small amounts of carbohydrates also occur in cell membranes, but, in contrast to plants and many invertebrate animals, humans have little structural carbohydrate in their bodies. Nucleic acids make up the genetic materials of the body. Deoxyribonucleic acid ( DNA) carries the body’s hereditary master code, the instructions according to which each cell operates. It is DNA, passed from parents to offspring, that dictates the inherited characteristics of each individual human. Ribonucleic acid ( RNA), of which there are several types, helps carry out the instructions encoded in the DNA. Along with water and organic compounds, the body’s constituents include various inorganic minerals. Chief among these are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, and iron. Calcium and phosphorus, combined as calcium-phosphate crystals, form a large part of the body’s bones. Calcium is also present as ions in the blood and interstitial fluid, as is sodium. Ions of phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium, on the other hand, are abundant within the intercellular fluid. All of these ions play vital roles in the body’s metabolic processes. Iron is present mainly as part of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying pigment of the red blood cells. Other mineral constituents of the body, found in minute but necessary concentrations, include cobalt, copper, iodine, manganese, and zinc. Organization of the body The cell is the basic living unit of the human body—indeed, of all organisms. The human body consists of trillions of cells, each capable of growth, metabolism, response to stimuli, and, with some exceptions, reproduction. Although there are some 200 different types of cells in the body, these can be grouped into four basic classes. These four basic cell types, together with their extracellular materials, form the fundamental tissues of the human body: (1) epithelial tissues, which cover the body’s surface and line the internal organs, body cavities, and passageways; (2) muscle tissues, which are capable of contraction and form the body’s musculature; (3) nerve tissues, which conduct electrical impulses and make up the nervous system; and (4) connective tissues, which are composed of widely spaced cells and large amounts of intercellular matrix and which bind together various body structures. Thus, the heart is an organ composed of all four tissues, whose function is to pump blood throughout the body. Of course, the heart does not function in isolation; it is part of a system composed of blood and blood vessels as well. The chief constituents and prime functions of each system are summarized below. (1) The integumentary system, composed of the skin and associated structures, protects the body from invasion by harmful microorganisms and chemicals; it also prevents water loss from the body. (2) The musculoskeletal system (also referred to separately as the muscle system and the skeletal system), composed of the skeletal muscles and bones (with about 206 of the latter in adults), moves the body and protectively houses its internal organs. (3) The respiratory system, composed of the breathing passages, lungs, and muscles of respiration, obtains from the air the oxygen necessary for cellular metabolism; it also returns to the air the carbon dioxide that forms as a waste product of such metabolism. (4) The circulatory system, composed of the heart, blood, and blood vessels, circulates a transport fluid throughout the body, providing the cells with a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients and carrying away waste products such as carbon dioxide and toxic nitrogen compounds. (5) The digestive system, composed of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines, breaks down food into usable substances (nutrients), which are then absorbed from the blood or lymph; this system also eliminates the unusable or excess portion of the food as fecal matter. (6) The excretory system, composed of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra, removes toxic nitrogen compounds and other wastes from the blood. (7) The nervous system, composed of the sensory organs, brain, spinal cord, and nerves, transmits, integrates, and analyzes sensory information and carries impulses to effect the appropriate muscular or glandular responses. (8) The endocrine system, composed of the hormone -secreting glands and tissues, provides a chemical communications network for coordinating various body processes. (9) The reproductive system, composed of the male or female sex organs, enables reproduction and thereby ensures the continuation of the species.

Some changes were made to the plot of the film, including changing the setting year from 1960 to 1959 and the location of Castle Rock from Maine to Oregon. The story takes place during the summer of 1960 in the fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. After a boy from Chamberlain, Maine, named Ray Brower disappears and is presumed dead, twelve-year-old [1] Gordie Lachance and his three friends, Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio set out "on a quest" [1] to find his body along the railway tracks [1] after telling their parents they will be camping out because they consider it to be a "rite of passage. " [2] "Because they are young, the idea of finding the body excites them, making this trip an adventure. " [1] During the course of their journey, the boys, who all come from abusive or dysfunctional families, come to grips with death and the harsh truths of growing up in a small factory town that does not seem to offer them much in the way of a future. " [1] In comparison to King's prior works, the narrative of The Body is complicated in that it is told in first-person point of view by the now adult Gordon Lachance. Most of the story is a straightforward retrospective of what happened, but comments, or entire chapters that relate to the present time, are interspersed throughout. Although he is only 12 at the time of the story, Gordie's favorite diversion is writing and storytelling. During the narrative, he tells stories to his friends, and two stories are presented in the text as short stories by Gordon Lachance, complete with attribution to the magazines in which they were published. Plot summary [ edit] Vern Tessio informs his three friends that he has overheard his older brother, Billy, talking with his friend Charlie Hogan, about inadvertently discovering the corpse of Ray Brower, a boy from Chamberlain, Maine, a town 40 miles or so east of Castle Rock, who has gone missing while going out to pick blueberries. The four friends decide to find it so as to be famous. Gordie explains how he and each of his friends come from either abusive or dysfunctional homes: Gordie's older brother Dennis (a. k. a. Denny) has been killed in a car accident while undergoing basic training in the army, and his parents (who are old enough to be his grandparents) have largely ignored him since then. Gordie also struggles over his brother's death and searches for a way to make peace with his loss. Chris is regularly abused by his alcoholic father and older brother, and is treated with contempt by his teachers because of his family's criminal reputation. Teddy's father suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder after returning from World War II and burned both of Teddy's ears against a stove in a fit of rage that caused him to be sentenced to a sanitarium. Although he suffers vision and hearing problems, Teddy still holds his father in high regard due to his military service. Vern, although his parents do not seem to be abusive towards him, is harassed by his brother and continues a long-term search for a jar containing several dollars' worth of pennies he buried under his porch. Gordie, Chris, and Teddy all believe that Vern's brother Billy stole the jar. Vern refuses to believe this since he hates his brother and doesn't want to admit Billy outsmarted him because of the trauma Billy has caused him. The boys walk along the railroad tracks toward the presumed location of the corpse. Along the way, they trespass at the town dump and are chased by Chopper, the dump custodian Milo Pressman's dog. Milo insults Teddy's father, which causes Teddy to unleash his anger on Milo. Gordie and Vern are nearly run over by a train while crossing a trestle. While at a resting point, Chris predicts that Gordie will grow up to become a famous writer – perhaps he will even write about his friends one day. When the boys finally find the body, a gang of bullies arrives just after they do. The gang is composed of leader John "Ace" Merrill, Vern's older brother Billy, Chris's older brother Richard (nicknamed "Eyeball"), Charlie Hogan, Norman "Fuzzy" Bracowicz, Vince Desjardins, and Jack "Jackie" Mudgett. The older boys are upset to see the younger group of four friends, and during an argument, Chris pulls a gun belonging to his father from his bag and fires into the air. Chris then threatens Ace, and after a brief standoff, Ace realizes that Chris is serious and the teenagers leave. Having seen the body, the boys realize that there is nothing else to be done with it and return home without further incident. The older boys ultimately decide to phone in the location of the body as an "anonymous tip", and it is eventually found by the authorities. Some days after the confrontation, Ace and Fuzzy break Gordie's nose and fingers, and kick him in the testicles, and are on the verge of harming him more seriously when they are run off by Gordie's neighbor, Aunt Evvie Chalmers. Eyeball breaks his brother's arm and "leaves his face looking like a Canadian sunrise". Teddy and Vern get less severe beatings, but the boys refuse to identify their assailants to the authorities, and there are no further repercussions. The narration then goes into fast-forward, and Gordie describes the next year or so briefly, stating that Teddy and Vern drifted off, befriending some younger boys. In high school, just as Chris predicted, Gordie begins taking college preparation courses; unexpectedly, so does Chris. In spite of abuse from his father, taunts from his classmates, and distrust from teachers and even school counselors, he manages to be successful with help from Gordie. The final two chapters describe the fates of Gordie's three friends, none of whom survive past young adulthood: Vern is killed in a house fire after a party in 1966. Teddy, while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, crashes his car in 1972, killing himself and his passengers. Chris, who became an outstanding high school and college student, and is in his second year of law school, is fatally stabbed after trying to stop an argument in a fast-food restaurant. Gordie, the only survivor, continues to write stories through college, and publishes a number of them in small literary journals and men's magazines. His first novel becomes a best-seller and a successful film. Since writing about the events in 1960, he has written seven novels about the supernatural. Gordie has a wife and three children, and is revealed to be a veteran of the Vietnam War and the counter-culture of the 1960s, occasionally referred to in the flash-forward narratives during the main story. The story ends with Gordie visiting Castle Rock and seeing Ace, realizing that he managed to escape the town and is finally able to make peace with the painful memories of his childhood. Accusation of plagiarism [ edit] In Lisa Rogak 's unauthorized biography Haunted Heart: The Life and Times of Stephen King, a friend of King's, George McLeod, claimed that King had cribbed the idea for The Body from a short story McLeod had written, but these claims are disputed by King. McLeod requested a portion of the royalties from The Body and Stand by Me; King refused. McLeod sued, which ended their friendship. Since then, King has refused his fans' requests to read their manuscripts for advice; King has claimed that he is concerned that there may be further accusations of plagiarism.
